Elisabeth – Limits in Our Knowledge

When Elizabeth gave birth to John, her neighbors and relatives rejoiced with her. However, their understanding of the miracle of his birth ended there.

And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father, but his mother answered, “No; he shall be called John.” And they said to her, “None of your relatives is called by this name.” And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called. And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they all wondered. (Luke 1:59–63 ESV)

The neighbors and relatives of Elizabeth and Zechariah failed to understand the full miracle of John’s birth. For them, it began and ended with Elizabeth giving birth despite her advanced age. They saw the continuation of the family line as an answer to prayer; they were unable to see the prophet that John would become. Even as they rejoiced over the miracle, they did not understand all that God was doing.

Ask God where you are missing the larger picture and pray that He will correct your point of view so that it comes from His perspective, not your own.
