Matei 58-13
This passage teaches a lesson on unshacable faith and Jesus’ supreme authority. Unshakable (or unshakeable) is an adjective describing something so firm, resolute, or deeply rooted that it cannot be destabilized, weakened, or destroyed.
A Roman centurion asks Jesus to heal his paralyzed servant but humbly requests He do it from a distance. Recognizing Jesus as the ultimate authority, the soldier trusts that Jesus can simply speak the word for the healing to occur. [1, 2]
A sermon based on Matthew 8:5-13 typically highlights three main takeaways:
- Radical Humility: Despite being an official with immense earthly power, the centurion admits he is unworthy to have Jesus enter his home. This demonstrates that true faith begins with acknowledging our unworthiness before God. [1, 2]
- The Power of the Word: The centurion’s military background taught him that a superior’s spoken command is law. He applies this to Jesus, recognizing that His word alone carries the authority to overrule sickness and nature. [1, 2, 3]
- Faith That Amazes God: Jesus marvels at this Gentile’s faith, noting it is greater than any He has found in Israel. It illustrates that God’s grace extends to all who humbly believe, regardless of their background. [1, 2, 4, 5]
