Scripture
“Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.”
— Epistle of James 1:19
Reflection: Much of public life rewards speed: react immediately, form an opinion immediately, answer immediately. James recommends almost the reverse—listen first, speak carefully, and refuse to let anger determine the pace of our response.
That is not weakness. Often it requires more strength to understand someone before answering than to win an argument quickly. The same principle applies beyond disagreements. We can listen more carefully to a family member, consider facts before passing judgment, or wait long enough in prayer for our first emotional reaction to lose some of its authority over us.
A practical exercise today is simple: in one conversation where you would normally prepare your response while the other person is still talking, deliberately listen until they finish. Ask yourself whether you understood not only their words, but what they were trying to communicate.
Wisdom often enters through attention before it appears in speech.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, give wisdom to those who govern and restraint to those who possess the power to harm. Protect Romania, comfort those suffering through war and uncertainty, and strengthen all who work faithfully for peace. Teach me today to listen before judging, to speak truth without cruelty, and to resist anger when it would govern my words. Give me patience with others, humility about my own understanding, and wisdom to know when to speak and when to remain silent. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
