Certain ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) groups, most notably Neturei Kartaand some Hasidic sects, do not recognize the modern State of Israel. They believe a Jewish state can only be established by the Messiah, making a secular state a “sinful” act of anti-messianic defiance. While some extreme groups reject all state funding, many others maintain an anti-Zionist ideology while still using Israeli social services.

  • Ideological Basis: These groups argue that Zionism is a secular movement that violates the Jewish law of “political quietism,” or waiting for divine redemption.
  • Neturei Karta: This faction is the most vocal, often protesting against the Israeli government and secularization.
  • Distinction in Haredim: While most Haredim are non-Zionist (focusing on Torah study rather than secular nationalism), only a minority of extreme sects like Neturei Karta are actively anti-Zionist to the point of refusing to recognize the state’s legitimacy.
  • Political Participation: Some anti-Zionist groups in Israel refuse to vote or take government funds, while others (like Agudat Israel) operate within the system, despite holding anti-Zionist views.
  • Internal Divisions: The Middle East Research and Information Project notes that this opposition dates back to the very creation of the state, as discussed in their 1992 article. The Wikipedia page on Haredim and Zionism provides a wider view of the different stances, including the views of Agudat Israel.

The My Jewish Learning article further explores the theological arguments. Ultimately, this position is a matter of profound theological conviction for these communities, rather than a political one, as explored on the PRX The World website
