Aviz amatorilor!

1 CHRONICLES 13

A unanimous decision is not always a right decision, and enthusiasm is not the best test of truth. Were David’s motives mixed as he sought to bring the ark home? Was the king subtly promoting himself as well as glorifying the Lord (v. 3)? Perhaps.

One thing is sure: David did not pause to seek the Lord’s direction in the venture. It was his habit to seek the will of God before he acted, but that time, he failed. Any Levite could have told him how to do the job!

The ark was God’s throne (Ps. 99:1), and the throne of God does not depend on the hand of man for support or protection. Had the ark been where it belonged, on the shoulders of the Levites, Uzza would have lived. No matter how successful at the beginning, man’s methods without God will ultimately fail. The time to find out how to do His work is before the job begins, not after the funeral.

1 CHRONICLES 14

David had his disappointments, but he did not allow them to keep him from getting things done. It has been said that the only people who never make mistakes are the people who never make anything. To permit past blunders to keep us from fulfilling present duties is to make those blunders even worse.

As you seek to serve the Lord, you will discover that friends will help you (v. 1), the Lord will establish you (v. 2), and the enemy will fight you (vv. 8–17). Building and battling are normal experiences in the life of faith (Luke 14:25–33). Be like Nehemiah’s workers on the wall, and have a tool in one hand and a ready weapon in the other (Neh. 4:17).

Twice David sought the mind of the Lord as he confronted his old enemies. Unlike Joshua at Ai, he did not assume that what worked once would work again (Josh. 7). Depending on past victories is a good way to guarantee future defeats. Ponder Judges 16:20–22.

1 CHRONICLES 15

Do God’s work biblically (1–15). David turned the work over to the Levites, and 870 of them united to bring the ark to Jerusalem. They had no problems because they did it God’s way.

Do God’s work joyfully (16–24). They served “the LORD with gladness” (Ps. 100:2). Singers and musicians joined their talents in praising the Lord joyfully (vv. 16, 24). Harps, horns, trumpets, and even cymbals accompanied the singers’ hymns of thanksgiving and praise.

Do God’s work sacrificially (25–26). If they are to be acceptable to the Lord, our worship and service must come from the altar where a price has been paid. Cheap ministry is powerless ministry that cannot bless people or glorify the Lord.

Do God’s work fervently (27–29). It was an enthusiastic procession with the Levites singing and playing instruments, the people shouting, and David leading them in praising the Lord. There are times when you should be silent before the Lord, but there are times when He wants to hear your praise. Vance Havner noted, “Too many church services start at eleven o’clock sharp and end at twelve o’clock dull.”
