Prefață
This book began as a series of informal weeknight talks given when I was pastor of two Baptist churches, one in Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire, and the other in Guildford, Surrey. This explains some features.
First, the chatty style is due to the transcribing of the recordings.
Second, the reference to local geographical and historical events.
Third, I have not covered the last fifty years, which are familiar to us.
I had realised that many church members know little or nothing about the story of Christianity between the New Testament period and today. They therefore did not realise how much they have been influenced by traditions developed during that time.
These can have both a negative and positive benefit.
Negative, because ‘those who forget history are condemned to relive it’. Most of the mistakes we make and errors we fall into have happened before and we can learn from our forefathers to avoid them.
Positive, because we have such a rich heritage it would be folly to ignore. We can draw inspiration and examples from the spiritual giants who went before us and, after all, we can look forward to meeting them personally in glory.
One welcome part of our time together was to conclude each ‘lecture’ by singing hymns written in the period we had reviewed, which brought us in direct contact with their love for our Lord. Those whose worship is largely made up of contemporary choruses are losing out on the buried treasure in older hymn books.
I would not pretend that this is a complete or even adequate history of the church. Regard it as a collection of impressionistic sketches. My interest throughout was in what we can learn from the past for our own task in the present.
