How are Americans migrating throughout the United States? Sources from two major moving companies give us some indication.
First, United Van Lines released its 2014 National Movers Survey, and the results of it are revealing in more ways than one.

The Top 10 States United Van Lines said people were moving to in 2014:
- Texas
- Florida
- Arizona
- South Carolina
- Colorado
- Washington
- Oregon
- Georgia
- North Carolina
- Utah
Of this list of top 10 states, 7 of them are red states due to being controlled legislatively by the GOP and only one is a blue state – Oregon. The rest are split-controlled.

United also reported the top 10 states people were moving from:
- Illinois
- Pennsylvania
- New York
- Michigan
- New Jersey
- Virginia
- Maryland
- Connecticut
- Ohio
- Iowa
Of these ten states, only 2 are controlled by the GOP, while 1 is controlled by the Democratic Party – Connecticut. The rest are split-controlled. As can be seen by this map from Gallup, the movement matches many states where people have a high desire to move:
Atlas Van Lines, another source on U.S. internal migration, showed customers flocking to Texas, Florida and Washington and away from New York, Illinois and Pennsylvania.

Only two places in the country controlled by the Democratic Party are highly sought after destinations – Oregon and Washington D.C.. The appeal of moving to the nation’s capital in such an economy is obvious – that’s where a ton of taxpayer dollars are being handed out.
Whether it’s lower taxes, lower unemployment, or a generally better business climate, people not only voted resoundingly in the midterm elections what they’d most prefer, they’re also voting with their feet.
