Caliphate Fever

Boko Haram terrorists declared Borno State in Nigeria as an Islamic caliphate this weekend. Some argue the move is just a lot of hot air inspired by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and the Nigerian military denies Boko Haram’s claim. Yet, the group has engaged in widespread, brutal slaughter of civilians, while the Nigerian military has been unable to chase the terrorists out of large portions of Nigeria’s northeast. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) already declared a caliphate at the end of June, and there are fears that caliphate fever might rise up in Indonesia as well, striking a fire in the most populous nation of Muslims in the world.
Boko Haram
In mid-April, 2014, Boko Haram terrorists broke into a school in the Borno State, Nigeria and
kidnapped hundreds of teenage girls. Leader Abubakar Shekau has laughed at the Nigerian government and has threatened to sell the girls, many of whom may already be “married” off to Muslim men. The girls’ freedom has still not been secured, and Boko Haram has made a series of raids since then, kidnapping other people — both men and women.
In a video released this weekend, Shekau gave thanks to Allah for giving Gwoza — a city of 250,000 people — to Boko Haram. “Thanks be to Allah who gave victory to our brethren in (the town of) Gwoza and made it part of the Islamic caliphate,” Abubakar Shekau said on the video.
The terrorists intend to enforce Sharia Law in Gwoza as a start and expand from there to the rest of the world… “Allah commands us to rule Gwoza by Islamic law. In fact, he commands us to rule the rest of the world, not only Nigeria, and now we have started.” The video also captured brutal acts of violence against Boko Haram’s victims. It shows people lined up on the ground, facedown, and then executed. Another two men are beaten to death with shovels. According to Human Rights Watch, Boko Haram killed at least 2000 people during the first half of the year.
ISIS and Indonesia
The world has turned its focus on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) during the past several months, watching the union of violent fighters gather and grow to forces of 50,000 in Syria and 30,000 in Iraq. The goal of ISIS is to establish an Islamic government based on a model that is 1300 years old, forcing Sharia Law on all the people in the area and torturing, maiming and threatening them with death unless they agree to an Islamic creed.
Its bloody brutality notwithstanding, ISIS and local jihad groups have attracted multitudes of young men, who see an opportunity to go fight for Allah. There is rising concern that the call to jihadist ranks might reach — not just the discontented in Iraq and Syria — but clear across Asia to the Islamic giant of Indonesia. Indonesian Islam has been considered fairly moderate, but ISIS is young and technology savvy, and between social media and cool new t-shirts, this terrorist organization has gathered the interest of young people around the world — young people who have no understanding of what it really means to live under the strict and extremely backwards power of a caliphate.
No more cutting beards, drinking, beer, or looking at pretty women. If you’re a woman, no more freedom or basic human rights.
Malaysian officials have been watching warily for ISIS elements to sprout up in their country. At least 19 men were recently arrested under suspicions of planning to join ISIS. There are about 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, and most are not killing people with shovels. There is a hunger in young men, though, to belong to something large and strong. As the passion for Boko Haram and ISIS continues to grow, we need to pray for these young Muslims, who think that they are serving God the Creator when they kill Christians and force people to “convert.”
The God of the Universe died for human beings, sinners all. That’s the true message Muslims need to understand — else we might truly be facing a true Islamic caliphate in the Middle East.
