Amid all the outlandish claims made by Fifa around the 2022 World Cupbidding process – and there have been many of them – one of the strangest has been somewhat overlooked.

When world football’s governing body published its evaluation report on the United States’ failed bid to host the tournament, it cited the

absence of “guarantees of federal government support” as the central cause for concern should the tournament be hosted by the country. (click)

There is no comparison. It has NOTHING to do with football. I was at the 1994 Cup in the States, and they filled every frigging seat, plus standing room only. They didn’t even know what the game was about. The reason the seats were filled and merchandise was sold out was because the Americans could cheer on several teams. It’s an immigrant nation, and they can wear the USA shirt one day and the Italia/France/Mexico shirt the next. The Americans tried to cheer the Irish to victory, because every American thinks they have Irish blood in them. The 1994 Cup also brought a change in the fans. Instead of hooligans, we saw Americans dressed up as bridges and Eiffel Towers, even though they didn’t know why. No anger, just love for everyone.

Now flash forward to a country with a better understanding of the game plus a profitable MLS league with flashy stadiums. You won’t have the empty seats I still see in Brasil and which were numerous in South Africa. Believe me…every seat in every stadium will be filled. In fact, I would suggest making the States a revolving holder, because almost every country will have a home crowd, which no other nation can claim. They can even do a co-host with Canada with Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver as sites. I, for one, can’t wait to get back there again, especially with their increased love for the game.
