Europa de-andoaselea a pus pumnul în gură oamenilor normali, i-a redus la tăcere. Iată cum arată noua ,,normalitate“ în Europa unită. Mai că ai zice că Putin are dreptate …

Austria wins Eurovision Song Contest

Austria’s Conchita Wurst: “This night is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom”

Austrian drag act Conchita Wurst has been crowned the winner of the 59th annual Eurovision Song Contest held in Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen.

The singer, whose real name is Tom Neuwirth, won with the song Rise Like a Phoenix, collecting 290 points.

The Netherlands finished second with 238 points, with Sweden in third place with 218 points.

The UK’s Molly Smitten-Downes came 17th, with 40 points for her song Children of the Universe.

It is the first time Austria has won the contest since 1966, and only the second time the country has competed in the final in the past 10 years as it either did not participate or qualify.

Conchita WurstConchita Wurst had been second favourite to win going into the contest

Wurst had been the second favourite to win behind Sweden going in to the competition, with many predicting the act could be too divisive among voters.

However she was the clear winner, with her victory announced after 34 of the 37 countries had submitted their scores.

Collecting her trophy on stage the singer said: “This night is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom. You know who you are – we are unity and we are unstoppable.”

Speaking backstage later, Wurst said she felt Europe had taken a stand by voting her the winner.

“I dream of a world where we don’t have to talk about unnecessary things like sexuality, who you love. I felt like tonight Europe showed that we are a community of respect and tolerance,” she said. …

EUROVISION: A CHORUS OF CAMPY CONTROVERSY

From a drag star to a song that may or may not be about annexing Crimea, Eurovision stirs debate

Perhaps no one better represents the kitschy controversies of the Eurovision pop music competition than 2014’s Austrian entrant, Conchita Wurst, a drag performer with long, flowing black hair and a full beard. Wurst’s song “Rise Like a Phoenix” is a power ballad with lyrics that might be about either recovering from a rocky relationship or the reunification and rebirth of an entire continent (“Rise like a phoenix/Out of the ashes/Seeking rather than vengeance/Retribution”).

It may not be part of its official mission statement, but wrapping thinly veiled political statements in several layers of easily digestible schmaltz is what Eurovision has always been about. The event, which pits against each other singers nominated by delegates to represent countries across Europe, was created by European public broadcasting networks in 1956 in an effort to culturally unite a continent torn apart by war.

It’s up for argument whether the contest has succeeded at that lofty mission. Not even the European Union — which has considerably more staff, money and power than Eurovision — has been able to successfully unify Europe without major bumps in the road.

But Eurovision has at least been able to keep the continent entertained with a steady stream of over-the-top performances.

Little has changed at Eurovision in those nearly 60 years: Power ballads are still favored to win over other songs, people still question the veracity of the scoring system, and political controversy remains ever-present.

It won’t always be explicit, but the blood, sweat, tears and alleged human rights violations of an ever-changing continent will be present in the subtext of nearly every performance during the contest finale on Saturday.

Conchita Wurst is one of the most visible examples of this year’s continental controversies. Austria’s selection of Wurst comes as much of Europe struggles with implementing legal rights for LGBT citizens. Even seemingly lenient countries like France have faced an unprecedented backlash this year. After legalizing same-sex marriage in 2013, the country has seen a steady stream of protests from cultural conservatives — including one in February that drew more than 100,000 people to the streets of Paris and Leon to protest same-sex rights. Russia also passed its internationally panned law against LGBT “propaganda” nearly a year ago, sparking protests across the world.

So it is not surprising that Wurst’s participation has caused its own backlash. Petitions have surfaced in Russia and Belarus to censor Wurst’s performances from broadcast, and a Russian politician called the singer “sick” and said Eurovision was promoting sodomy.

Wurst’s “Phoenix” isn’t the only song that is at once an affirmation and a subversion of European identity. In the (click)

Gay Football Player Drafted Into The NFL (VIDEO)

Michael Sam has reached the NFL. The NFL has reached out to Michael Sam. Both milestones made American sports history.

The first-team All-American defensive lineman from the University of Missouribecame the first openly gay player ever drafted into the NFL when the St. Louis Rams selected him with the 249th pick in the seventh round of the 2014 draft. Sam, the 2013 SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, waited until the eighth-to-last selection to hear his name called at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Saturday.

In a powerful scene broadcast by ESPN after his selection was announced, Sam could be seen overcome with emotion as he received a phone call from Rams coach Jeff Fisher. As he celebrated the historic moment, Sam shared an embrace and kiss with his boyfriend.

The 24-year-old from Hitchcock, Texas announced that he was gay in February in interviews with The New York Times and ESPN. He told both media outlets that he came out to his teammates during a preseason football practice before the Tigers’ 2013 campaign. Sam went on to lead the SEC in sacks (11.5) and tackles for a loss (19)as Missouri roared to a 12-2 record.

“I understand how big this is,” Sam told ESPN in February. “It’s a big deal. No one has done this before. And it’s kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be … I want to be a football player in the NFL.”

Listed at at 6′ 2″ and 261 pounds, Sam’s draft stock took a hit after a lackluster performance in the drills at the NFL Scouting Combine, including the 40-yard dash, vertical leap and bench press. He improved upon his performances during a subsequent workout at Missouri but concerns about his size, strength and true NFL position persisted as the draft approached. As the third day of the draft progressed, many following along on Twitter worried that his size and speed weren’t the only things keeping him from being drafted earlier.

Sam’s milestone selection in the NFL draft was the latest historic moment for a gay athlete. In February, Brooklyn Nets center Jason Collins became the first openly gay player in NBA history. In May 2013, Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Robbie Rogers became the first openly gay player in MLS history. In 2014, Sam could become the first openly gay athlete to play in an NFL game.

“Without a doubt, this is a game changer,” GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellissaid in a statement. “Today, Michael Sam has redefined what it takes to be a champion. He’s tackled stereotypes and joins the ranks of athletic trailblazers like Jason Collins and Brittney Griner in showing Americans that there’s no place for homophobia on the field. As support for equality continues to surge, it’s clear that sports fans are ready, football is ready, and America is ready for its first openly gay NFL player.”

It’s not an issue amongst evolved moderns, but to the nation’s 1/3 know-nothings who make all the noise and have virtually ground all progress to a halt in this country, it remains the ultimate taboo. Missouri is ground-zero for these reactionaries with the bottom half of the state overwhelming the urban modernity of the north to dictate its politics and climate.
