One of the first things that strikes you down in the U.S.-led-coalition headquarters in Bagram, north of Kabul, is how young many of the soldiers are.  Once while reporting on a training mission involving soldiers doing target practice, I couldn’t help noticing a young soldier reading Harry Potter while waiting his turn to shoot.

At another time I fell in with a bunch of soldiers who looked barely out of their teens out on  a jog who were quizzing each other on just how many “stans were there in the region” as in Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and so on.  “Heck, I never been to New York City, how am I supposed to know how many  of them are  there,” one of them from the American Midwest said .
